Strange laws are a part of
our history and development. Here are a few:

Winchester, Massachusetts: tightrope walking is only permitted
inside churches.
·
North
Carolina: unlawful to use an elephant to plow a
cotton field.
·
Clarendon, Texas: lawyers must accept eggs, chickens, or
other produce (as well as money) as payment of legal
fees.
·
Queen Margaret
of Scotland (1288): during leap year any woman could
propose to any available man. If he refused her, he would be fined
L100.
·
Ancient
Cambodia: illegal to insult a rice
plant.
·
Saudi
Arabia: A woman may divorce her husband if he
does not keep her supplied with coffee.
·
Finland: Donald Duck comic books were banned
from the libraries because he did not wear
pants.
·
England: illegal to wrestle with an untrained
bull in public.
·
Omaha, Nebraska: a person receiving an injury due to a
defective pavement must advise the city clerk of the fact five days
before the accident in order to receive
compensation.

Philippine
Islands (some parts): forbidden to mention the
name of anyone living.
·
Upton-on-Severn, England: it is illegal for a married couple to
live in a discarded bus.
·
Shawnee, Oklahoma: three or more dogs cannot meet on
private property without the consent of the
owner.
·
England (1712-1862): soap was considered a whim
of the English aristocracy, and there was a tax on those who used
it.
·
Ancient
Ireland: a crime for bees to
trespass.
·
Seattle, Washington: illegal to carry a concealed weapon
over 6 feet in length.
·
Cryus the
Great, a Persian emperor: sentenced a river to death because his
horse had drowned in it.
·
Greenwich, England (1800's): unlawful to impersonate a
retired person on a pension.
·
Medieval
Europe: butchers were not permitted to serve on
juries; anyone who spent their days killing animals might be
insensitive to the taking of life.

Equatorial
Guinea: it is illegal to name a baby
Monica.
·
Pacific Grove, California: against the law to threaten a
butterfly.
·
Denver, Colorado: any acrobatics that might frighten the
horses are not permitted on the sidewalks.
·
Alexander the
Great, Greek Empire in the 4th century: ordered all of the soldiers
to shave of their beards; beards served as a convenient handle by
which enemies could grab them.
·
Phoenix, Arizona: it is illegal to place glass bottles
under a horse's feet.
·
Kiluken, Liberia: may not walk through town carrying a
white rooster.
·
Great
Britain (19th century): you could receive the
death penalty for committing suicide.
·
Ancient
Egypt: courts of law met in the dark so that
the judges remain impartial by not being able to see the defendant,
the accuser, or the witnesses.
·
Uruguay: dueling is permitted only if
both parties are blood donors.
·
Indiana: you must not peep onto someone's
property.
·
Kentucky: unlawful to throw eggs at a public
speaker.
·
Sweden: parents are not permitted to insult or
shame their children.
·
Breton, Alabama: it is unlawful to ride down the street
in a motorboat.
·
London, England: it is illegal to drive a car without
